Decide if it’s wood and if it has a finish on it. Choose the right paint for your project and prepare the surface. Sanding or stripping maybe in order.
Protect your surfaces and your breathing by following the tips.
Some swear by chalk paint. Claim is no prep needed. I go for some light sanding to remove any gloss. Prime with Kilz primer, then paint. Seal with at least three coats of a polyurethane.

Hello Kelly,
Spray paint come in multiple finishes including satin and matte which may be a nice sheen for your furniture painting project.
Rustoleums Universal line has a wonderful applicator spray tip - that can offer effortless and professional results. I am a huge fan of spray painting —the formulations now have vastly improved.

Additionally-There is also chalk paint and milk paint recent phenomenon that is often used on furniture...and they too have different properties and finishes. Chalk paint is particularly popular. Have you considered Chalk paint? Again-I favor the Rustoleum products, their products and support are fabulous. Perhaps it might be available in a color —that you like? Heres some helpful links.
Best wishes in your furniture rehab!
