You can tear it out and patch the drywall and paint OR simply paint the planks to change up the look OR you can do a variety of paint effects such as a distressed look, paint the planks various colors to add a lot of interest. Not sure if you are wanting to remove it or just make it look different.

What is it that's wrong about your ceiling. You are not giving enough information.
If it's wood, try painting it. First lightly sand to remove any varnish then if you are using gloss, use and undercoat first. Then the gloss.
