Hi Angie, Practice first at low level. If you can make a good job of raking out and re-pointing and are happy to do it at a height (Ladder or better still Platform) and are not prone to stepping back to admire your work - go ahead - but use a harness for safety!
Make sure existing paint is free of any cracks or chips. Clean with TSP mixture and let dry. How you will paint will be influenced by the material you are painting. If you can, I highly recommend a paint sprayer. You can use large cardboard to cover trim around doors and windows from overspray and this will require a 2nd person.
