You can use a creme show polish. You will have to rub it in and then buff off the excess. It's cheap and easy to find but your colors will be limited. Kiwi is a good name brand. It comes in a little round tin.
Next thing you can try is leather dye. It runs about 8 bucks and comes in a lot of colors. You will have to tape off the area you don't want painted that is close to the area you are doing. You will have to swab it on and let it soak in. You can then wipe off any excess. Tandy leather supplies has a nice selection. If you have a Tandy near you take your coat to them. They can tell you what will work best.
The other thing you can do is go to a local shoe repair store. Check your yellow pages. A lot of them carry some awesome leather shoe dye. Some of them will even do it for you.
I would get leather die like you would use on shoes maybe 3 or 4 bottles

Brown paste shoe polish. Just like polishing a pair of shoes. Black would make it too dark. Put some shoe polish on the surface with a cloth. Let it dry for a while and then buff with a clean cloth.
