Make sure you get permission from the landlord in writing with anything you do.
Go to your landlord with a plan and color swatches to show what you want to do to the cabinets. If he thinks it will improve the rentability in the future he may let you paint the cabinets. Make sure you get written permission and keep the paper with your lease until after you move in case he wants to charge you to change the cupboards back to original. I lived in a rental house for fourteen years and they tried to charge me for the floors they painted many years before, and the walls that they did not paint once when we lived in the house.
Just to repeat previous answers, I think the plan to get written permission is very smart; perhaps accompanied with photos of existing, and swatches , and clearly signed and dated. Better to be safe than sorry regarding the landlord's rules and preferences.
I wonder if keeping them white on the inside, but using a different paint finish, might help? - such as benjamin moore "aqua glow" or something that is semi-gloss? I am imagining that they were previously sort of 'white washed' and that the existing surface is sort of scruffy, and easily marked.
I would not want mint green in my kitchen, but no harm in asking. Be careful and specific about what you will do for the hinges and knobs. A lazy paint job where you just try to go around them ( my style) may not be good enough; or worse if you painted over them... Removing and replacing that hardware is a a real pain in my opinion.
Good luck.
Hi Kathy! I used mint green on our lowers with white uppers and I love how it looks! I do have to wipe the lowers down occasionally (especially the cabinet that has the trash can in it and around the stove) but not more than once or twice a month.
