How do I save my land along a river?
I have a large area of my lot that is erroading into a river. What is an inexpensive way to hold back the dirt? If using plants which type will keep snakes away? We have copperheads and rattlesnakes! Thank you for any advice you can give me.

If you can afford it have some big rock hauled in to keep the dirt in place.
Not sure about the cost but large stone, rip rap, would be your best bet.
LIKELY, rules about ANYTHING in or on river banks. Seems I read Army Corps of Engineers must issue a permit.
Plant shrubs, grass, and trees along the edges. Do not mow close to the edges but if you want a path to the water alternate where the path is every year or so.
Nothing you plant will keep snakes away, you just need to know how to approach the riverbed correctly. Since you live in snake country, and frankly who doesn't, I had to capture a rattlesnake in Santa Monica at one point, you should learn about snakes and their habits just to keep yourself and your family safe. Here are some sites with things you can do to help stop the erosion. I would also contact your local government officials, they might be able to help too.
