Use Kilz primer. It seals and allows you a smooth white finish!
Do you mean wood grain? You may simply have to use two coats of a good primer.
Bonnie, You first would need to use a bonding primer, like THIS ONE. It will adhere to the cabinets best and not scratch off like just a standard Kilz primer would. (also, primer alone will not fill the grain !) Then you can paint on a wood grain filler this THIS ONE. After that is dry, you can paint 2 coats of latex paint, and do a final step of wet sanding, ( I show you that in this painting tips post) for a very smooth finish!
