I want to build a carport and one long side needs to be a clear span of 20'. What size bean do I need? The snow load is minimal as I am in Portland Oregon. Thanks, j

  • Check your local Building code. That dictates what you can and can't do. Have permits been pulled? Inspection schedule in place?

John your starting point - planning and zoning to see if you are even allowed to put this type of structure where you want to in your area - if using an architect for the design (probably required in your area to get a building permit anyway) he/she can help with that. Good luck!

No and what does that have to do with the size of the beam? It will be on the property line so they wouldn't issue permits anyhow.

Take it from me, building an illegal structure is a big headache and can be costly. There are always setback requirements when building on a property line. Will your neighbor be unhappy and make you tear it down? That said, if you are going to roll the dice here is a website that has span charts. Good Luck
