Carolyn, you can let your imagination run wild with this project. The 'in thing' is to paint any wood furniture with Chalk Paint (Annie Sloan is good). It has a rather flat, farm-house look about it which might not be what you are looking for, though. However, if you do decide to go along those lines, you can actually distress it or add dark wax in the grooves to make it look really weathered and old. (There are many how-to videos on line). Also, chalk paint requires no sanding (Yes, really) or priming and dries in about 30 mins.

Here is an article on the pros and cons of chalk paint. It shows kitchen cabinets but I am sure the idea would be the same.

Refinish your cabinet anyway you want that makes you feel good and are comfortable living with. What's "in" today will be "out" in a few years. Then you'll spend more time and money (that's what decorators want) redoing it.
