You can make the Scrabble tiles any size you want by cutting some lumber. Example: Using a 1x4 cut into 3.5 lengths would give you 3.5 x 3.5 size squares, a 1x6 cut into 5.5 lengths would give you a 5.5 size squares, etc. If you measure a 1x4 for width you will find that it is really 3.5 wide--not 4, and a 1x6 is really 5.5 wide. You can go bigger with 1x8's, 1 x 10's. You can buy premium lumber for a nicer smoother piece of wood. A bit more expensive but for this project I would buy better lumber. Sand smooth, then paint or stain the squares and then use a alphabet stencil that fits on your square for your letters. Finish with a poly as a final finish. Be careful with your measuring and cutting so that your squares are consistent. You can find alphabet stencils in different sizes at WalMart, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and online.
