What to cover grass seed with?
I'm seeding my lawn with fescue after thatching & aerating. What is the best thing to put over the seed so it doesn't wash away. I do not want to use straw because of the weed seeds in it.

If you are seeding on a hill, the best thing is to add some oat seeds to your grass seed. The oats come up very quickly and hold the soil in place until the grass seed takes. When you cut the lawn the oats will die off and the grass will do really well. If you do a heavy seeding, crisscrossing , you will always have some left unless you have a torrential downpour. A tarp is not good because it will withhold the rain and moisture from the seed. Purchase seed that is bird resistant so they do not come for a good feed.
Reseeded my lawn this past spring. I used a top soil and worked out perfect. I am in Zone 9 if that makes any difference.
Saw dust, applied thinly, peat moss (which will help hold water to keep seed moist), or composted cow manure will also work for your re-seeding.
