Leave them. They will come off easily in spring.
Take the lawn mower to them, they are like weeds. They will come back in spring. I've been doing this for 20 years.
Hostas usually are cut back after the first frost. Cutting them down to about inch and half will be fine. The plant top dies off in the winter and fresh new tips/shoots start to poke out of the ground April/May depending on your location. Some gardeners mulch around the cut back stems in case of a severe winter freeze. They really are very resilient plants.
Leave them they don't die. Clean them in the spring. Trust me I have so many.
Not cutting and removing the dead foliage and flower spikes is ugly. I remove it. The plants will revive in the spring bigger and better than ever.
Always cut them down to an inch or two and then cover with mulch for the winter. They are almost impossible to kill so either way works.
I cut mine in late fall. I like to clean it up and I widen the area in front of them. If you rake in spring, you cut the new tops coming up. I cut back the iris at the same time and peonies. If you need to separate, it's easy to do in spring. I'm in Kansas City, Kansas- very hot, humid weather.
