Wash it with Murphy's Oil Soap then condition with Old English products. If you have not done it in a while, you will be surprised how dirty they are and how pretty they look when cleaned and reconditioned.
after cleaning you could coat it with polyurethane. In 1927 it probably was finished with oil based varnish. But you can put water based poly over that. Cherish your old trim. . . it is probably wider and deeper (baseboards) than most contemporary woodwork.
Are you seeking to clean it up, re-stain, or re-paint?
Bees wax polish is good for older wood. You can use Murphy's Oil soap to clean it, if it's sealed wood.
just put a coat of varnish over it ----- It must be beautiful
Hi Richard,
I haven't used it yet, but I've heard good things about Howard Feed-N-Wax. It's a wood polish and conditioner with beeswax and orange oil. There are also some 'salves' out there that only use a little bit to freshen dried out wood furniture. It make take some trial and error on your part to discover what works best for you. Please be sure to come back and let us know what you've used!
I should think that your home's woodwork would attract a number of people with appreciation for the craftsmanship. If you decide to move, insure that the beauty of the woodworking is highlighted via professional camera equipment and photographer. Your home sounds phenomenal!
