Do you want carpet again or another type of flooring?
We are very happy with our decision to rip out all of the carpet in our house. Replaced it with sheet vinyl that looks like large tiles. So much easier to keep clean and throw rugs make changing the look at snap. Rip it up into about 3 foot sections, roll those up and pull the pad up. Now what are you going to replace the nasty old carpet. with?
I am all about ripping out carpet and we are considering doing the same with our bedroom thanks to our dogs. I would say wood flooring would be the best suggestion.
You could rip out and just paint whatever is under it. If you really want carpet check the remnant section of carpet store. This is unused, leftover from other jobs. It's often big enough for single room and many larger than needed. You may need someone to install. Or if you are fairly handy, move all furniture out of room. rip up old carpet and pad, clean floor. start in one corner and line up side with wall, spread out and smooth to other wall. You will need a sharp carpet knife(it's curved). Cut off section you don't need; easiest done from back of carpet. Go slow and check often to be sure it's right. When excess is gone, go over carpet again smoothing and checking for any further excess. You can put down some double sided tape to help hold it in place. You may see some stretching start to appear after some time but this is due to not having the special equipment that carpet layers have. If you don't have a usable threshold plate for door way get one. It will keep you from tripping over edge.
