Make a star out of PVC pipes or furring strips. Attach lights. Get three to five looooooong strings of lights. Attach all to only one point of the star. Attach the other ends onto a tree, your house or the roof, each string spaced about 12"18" apart. We did this one year and it was beautiful!
There's this one on Hometalk. I just made my star yesterday and painted it white. Will buy lights today.

Shooting Stars
I would hang up a lighted Christmas star and next to it include running lights to make the tail down to a manger scene or whatever you have in mind. The running lights do not need to be a part of the star, just next to it to look as though they are streaming from it. There are many types of streaming lights these days with which to decorate. Sounds wonderful!!
