How do I organize the island in my kitchen?
I absolutely love my kitchen island because we don’t have much counterspace so it gives me work space for meal prep. Underneath it is just one big hole with no shelves which is very annoying. What DIY ideas do you have for this space?

Hi. Use put-together shelving. Paint them the same color as your cabinets or as the kitchen walls. The backs are usually cardboard. Do paint these also. Use as many or just one or two and leave the rest of the space open. I had an island that had a 42 inch cabinet underneath and the top just covered that. I replaced the top with a 42 inch by 60 inch top and added a bookcase on one side, leaving the original 42 inch one. The rest I left open for stools. Good luck to you!
If you're not short on storage space - I'd put things I might use most in that area - but those things that are in the best shape - colorful bowls, pots and pans and baskets. You can have a wire basket with potatoes or onions at the ready. I'd stay way from breakables such as dishes - unless you have space - just in case someone might get to close to knock anything over. You can even put faux fruits or vegetables in a bread dough bowl that might span the whole length of the island. When I decorate I change things out seasonally - so you can think in that regard - adding a few colorful touches that reflect the seasons.

Hi Tonia. Flat packed furniture that you put together.
If it isn't open and has doors, you could use the stackable wire shelves to hold items and things like the clear shoeboxes to hold smaller things that you would keep in it. The stackable wire shelves would work if it is open also. They are usually sold as items to use under the sink in the kitchen and bathroom. I use a microwave cart as a kitchen island and I keep things like cooling racks and cookie sheets on the open shelf and boxed items in the two door cupboard. It works really well in my long narrow kitchen that doesn't give much counter space once you put things like the coffee pot, microwave, drying rack, toaster oven, blender, toaster and knife rack on the counters. My cupboards don't hold tall things, hence they go on the counter. The microwave cart is on castors so it can be moved to wherever we want to do prep work, etc.
