Depending on the thickness and density of the stainless steel, it may be that the burn has permeated too deeply into the pot to be completely removed. How heavy is the pot? This is usually an indication of how thick the layers on the bottom are.
Comet cleanser and green scrubber sponge I use on all my stainless pans Shiny Shiny!
Use Bar Keepers Friend powder. Use an old rag because it will stain any light colored cloth when removing the debris.
I just had this problem and the grease was really a black carbon. Only thing that worked was a 4 to 1 mix of vinegar and water in a deep frying pan, burnt pot sitting in the liquid ( some water in the burnt pot so it does not float) and boil for 30 minutes. The black began to flake off. I gently coaxed it off with a razor blade after it cooled. Then perhaps some Bar Keepers friend to finish up. Not a perfect solution but I found nothing else that even touched the black stuff before boiling in the vinegar/water.
I have used spray oven cleaner on the bottoms of my really bad pots. But do this outside with a hose handy to rinse it off.
