Linda, that's a tough one because deer can leap pretty high. I have a five foot fence, and they still get into my yard. I'd guess you'd need at least a six foot fence, and you might want a privacy fence that they can't see through, so they won't want to leap over it because they won't be able to see what's on the other side.
Yep, Beth is right about a deer fence needing to be high. I have seen deer leap over a 6 ft + high fence, from a standing position. Deer have extraordinary ability to find where food is, and to get at it.

Here are some great tips to protect your garden from deer:

There are very few plants that will deter deer but you can try "Flying Dragon". It has thorns that are an inch or longer when mature. Too prickly for deer.
You may have better luck by erecting 2 fences, 4' apart, because deer appear to exhibit poor depth perception.
They dislike grey plants (artemesia, sage), and tend to avoid lavender, thyme, rosemary, garlic, onions, daffodils, zinnias, iris, etc.
Usually have to be 8 ft high. FYI the only deterrent I’ve ever used successfully without a fence is Liquid Fence. They seem to leave my hostas alone when I use it. It smells so disgusting right after you use it. Not sure you can spray it on edible plants tho? Not sure I’d want to. Any homemade deterrents are a waste of time so I’d ignore them all.
