You could paint the table with chalk paint to match. You only need to sand lightly and clean the table before painting.
You can mix and match woods, styles of furniture, etc. What I would do is use a table runner or centerpiece and cushions on the chairs that tie in with the décor to help blend it in. I have everything from my great grandmothers drop down desk to French provincial, country and modern dispersed in every room in my house and they all somehow look good together. My kitchen has dark painted wood trim with wood Formica type counter tops almost the same color, yet my blonde microwave cart that I use as a center island in the skinny kitchen looks really good. I hope this helps you get an idea how to integrate your oak table into your new furniture, Mari!
Wood matches anything. No matter what the table is like it being wood will create a definition of 2 spaces since it's different from other furniture. Bunch of suggestions will come to paint it but I think you should leave it. If the legs are too heavy & your new living room furniture is more streamlined modern maybe update them with new legs, may affect how "solid it is". You could stain it a little darker making it more modern I'd still lean towards leaving it alone. Maybe invest in a really nice high end table cloth or runner to tie it to living room decor along with candle/candle sticks that match in both areas.
I have multiple types of wood so remember, it doesn't have to match as long as it "goes". Use decor to tie it in.
If all else fails and you don't want to refinish, you can just throw a runner or table cloth on the table, placemats, and seat cushions.
Cover table with a Table cloth.
I mix and match wood tones all the time, especially with a table. I would make sure your chairs have the same feel as your overall style, such as modern, farmhouse, cottage-chic.
