Hi Yanick, first thing I would recommend is to raise the main rod up and add a second rod the majority of the way beneath it. That will literally double your hanging space. On the floor a simple shelf will do a lot for your shoes.
Hang suit jackets and folded dress slacks/skirts on the same hanger. All woolen slacks should be folded in half, with acid free paper, in drawers.
Hang blouses and vests on the same hanger.
Hang long dresses with the length tucked into the top section of hanger to save floor space.
All sweaters should be folded and placed in drawers, to avoid stretching. Alternate top and bottom when placing in drawers, if needed to conserve space.
Shoes and boots can be placed in canvas duck shoe trees, behind doors, stored on shelves in their original boxes, or placed in see through boxes.
Socks can be folded and stood on end, either vertically or horizontally, in a drawer.
Hats and gloves can be stored in baskets and kept on a shelf, or stored under your bed, until needed.
Use your closet's vertical space for shoes, boots, handbags, etc. Follow Grandmashouse's advice to maximize rod space.
If you still have too much, it's time to sell or donate items.
Ask yourself these 2 questions:
Do I love it?
Would I buy it today?
That may help you to reduce the number of items.
Adding a second rod or tiering your hangers. You can use soda can tabs to tier the hangers.
Tank tops can be hung on one hanger. Either a circular scarf hanger or use shower curtain rings on a regular hanger.
Use huggable hangers or some other thin flocked hanger. They take up so much less space.
Shoes: place heel to toe or use Shoe Slots Space Saver.
Great answer from Kathy. Once you decide which shoes to keep-the rest can be donated. Our local cat shelter is collecting gently used shoes to distribute to those in need.
I'd recommend a behind the door shoe rack. I found one at Bed, Bath & Beyond that holds 30 pairs of shoes, shoe boots or
purses or scarves. Then get rid of anything you don't use or like. Next, off season clothes can be stored in under bed storage containers. Then organize clothes you have for this season. Boots can be kept upright by putting a paper towel roll (minus the paper towels) in each boot.
Enjoy your uncluttered closet! :)
If you have a regular door on your closet, you can get one of those clear pocket shoe organizers that hangs on the door, but you don't have to put shoes in it. It's great for storing gloves, scarves folded neatly, belts, etc. Visit a closet/storage store, and see what's available to fit your needs.
I also agree with Kathy: be ruthless and get rid of anything you haven't worn in a long while (in a year or more; but if it's something special, go ahead and keep it) because you probably won't wear it again.
First remove all items from your closet and place on your bed. Now sort thru everything making two piles - one to keep and one to donate. If you haven't worn an item in a year then donate. If an outfit no longer fits donate it. Do the same with the shoes. Shoes you no longer wear or want donate. Then whatever is left neatly organize it back into your closet. I recently decluttered and cleaned my master closet. I organized short sleeved and sleeveless outfits on one side for spring/summer and long sleeved and warmer outfits on other side for fall/winter. This way its easier to find items to wear in the appropriate season. My shoes I placed on a boot tray on a shelf rather than the floor. Its easier for me to see them at eye level than looking on the floor for a pair. I put all heels together and sneakers together so I can find what I'm looking for. For the first time in a very long time I can actually walk in my closet and find/see what I'm looking for. Such a pleasure. I'm in the process of doing the other bedroom closets as well. You feel so much better after its done plus donating to help others out too. Things tend to get out of hand in a closet because you can just shut the door and forget about it. I have so much more room now and clothes aren't wrinkled from being shoved/packed into a overcrowded closet.
