The best luck we’ve had is making sure there’s a scratching post near the furniture she most likes to scratch. That and trimming her nails regularly.

A question for the ages lol! I discovered, by accident, that if I drap a thow over the arm of the sofa and let it hang down over the front, my cat won't scratch it. Who knew! I have a throw over each arm hanging down to the floor.

Friends of mine cut up one of those clear plastic floor runners and tucked pieces of it around the ends of the sofa where their cat liked to scratch and that works too. I may try tacking a piece of plastc runner around the back edges of my Lazy Boy chair that my furry little darling has taken a liking to!

I found this explanation about why this works on Google:

Plastic is another smooth texture that doesn't appeal to cats for scratching purposes.Cats scratch to sharpen their claws and to leave their scent, and they can't really sink them into plastic. They especially dislike slippery vinyl plastic and plastic car mats with the nubby side up.

I always had a spray water bottle near by. If my cat got near the furniture to scratch it, I sprayed the water into the air. It was enough to scare her and eventually she stopped trying.

Spritz your cat with vinegar when it approaches your furniture. Cats dislike the smell.
