Put a large amount of baking soda in about a 2 cup container and put sweater and baking soda in large plastic container and leave for for 24 hours. Be sure that container is large enough for the air to get around both the sweater and 2 cups baking soda. May have to repeat several times until you are satisfied with results. Then hang sweater out in fresh air for at least 24 hours. Dollar stores or whatever they are called in your area sell very large boxes of baking soda for very little. Good luck.

Frresh air works well. Also, you can wad up newspaper or use shredded paper inserted inside. The paper will absorb some of the smell. Then toss the paper.

I'd use activated charcoal you can get it online(amazon in little sachets)online in bulk or fish aquarium stores it's used in filters. Put the clothes, shoes in garbage bag with charcoal(don't get it on your clothes of course) seal it up and let it sit 1-2 days. Put charcoal in shallow pan then put sweater in bag and pan of charcoal on top of sweater or put charcoal in cheesecloth bags,or even make little sachets of charcoal using coffee filters & rubbers bands.Just don't get charcoal on sweater/clothes.Found all these ways online don't know if any work????? https://www.stretcher.com/stories/01/010924b.cfm MORE https://grandfolk.com/guide/how-to-get-mothball-smell-out-of-clothing/ MORE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60duIF4ry0U

My favorite deodorizer is charcoal (make sure it doesn't have lighter fluid) and newspaper. Layer newspaper, then charcoal, then newspaper, then the sweater.

I cheated for a vehicle that had a horrible smell and bought these charcoal bags which work wonderfully and are reusable
