Cynthia: Also... find the source of the mold? Water weeping in, etc? Fix that!

Dampen the moldy wall and baseboard prior to contact or removal in order to minimize the spread of spores once the mold is disturbed.

Create a solution with hot water and a non-ammonia detergent. Prepare the solution according to the cleaner manufacturer's instructions.

Scrub the mold off of the wall and baseboard using a sponge, rag, scrub brush or combination of cleaning tools.

Prepare a bleach solution that is no more than 10% bleach. The remainder of the solution should consist of cool water.

Apply the bleach solution to the area from which the mold was removed. Treat an area that extends beyond where the visible mold was to ensure that all possible mold is treated. Allow the bleach solution to stay on the wall for 10 to 15 minutes.

Dry the bleached area quickly. Direct fans toward the damp area to increase air circulation and use a wet/dry shop vacuum, if available.

  • You have a problem. Most likely water intrusion that is obviously undetected . This is more than a homeowner diy, you should call in a contractor to ascertain the cause and the mold remediation specialists. Get everyone out of the house. Chances are it isn't safe to breathe in there. Kids, pets, elderly or those with compromised immune systems are at high risk. I can't stress enough how dangerous this situation is. Walls will need to be opened up and probably at least sheet rock replaced provided the framing hasn't rotted out.

We had this problem and had small pin hole leak in drain in the slab foundation which created enuf moisture to keep everything damp forming mold in the walls which finally showed up on outer part where we could see it but by then it was too late. All the insides, studs, framing, drywall was shot. Huge mess.Slab had to jack-hammered up to even get to leak to fix it first.Had to have company come in to remove everything & 3 rooms fixed. Really need to find source before you do anything to clean it up. Black mold VERY dangerous make you sick especially if you have it & don't even know it's there. Call plumber to check for source. Check into home owners insurance for coverage ours was covered except deduct, even the 12 days we had to move out for mold clean-up.
