I'm also 'not too good' with houseplants -- a friend gave me 5 small plastic plants that look really nice (small but beautiful) and she explained that she'd found them in Asda and also B&M - hope these stores are in your area - if not, try on line (eBay or similar) - it's a nice feeling knowing I "can't" kill my new plants. I live in central Florida and have been growing rosemary in pots, the fragrance is nice and they can be trimmed into shapes if you want. I kill cactus, too, and I have kept my rosemary alive for over a year now! You can also clip it to use in the kitchen for seasoning!
