I bought a metal tin. It was from duck dynasty.
Im showing my age here. In the old days we used to use oil cloth. You tacked it up with decorative tacks and changed it when it got bad.

You could also use a vinyl table cloth if your kitchen is small. You could even change out for the holidays.
Another option would be washable wallpaper. Some of it even looks like tile. Again make sure its not permanently installed.

Jennifer: I had the same problem! So, I bought some lightweight tin tiles on amazon -- and used heavy-duty velcro to put them up.

You do NOT want oil cloth by your stove. Nothing flammable should be around a cooking surface even BEHIND your stove. They make some amazing contact papers, or try a piece of acrylic with your favorite wall paper BEHIND it. Glue it on the acrylic panel face up and use plastic glue to add hook to hang it with a few cup hooks. Remove it any time, and all you have it two tiny holes to patch.

You do know that oil cloth isn't really made with oil any more. Its just the name of the product. Real oil cloth WAS made with linseed oil but they discontinued that method a long time ago. Now its just cloth coated with vinyl. Its no more flammable than contact paper.
You could also talk with your landlord. Sometimes a landlord is willing to split the cost of small pre-approved upgrades.
