Hi Tami, Is this the post you are referring to? https://www.hometalk.com/diy/floors-ceilings/gorgeous-colorful-soft-rug-from-old-sweaters-36058104
If so, I believe it calls for wool sweaters because it's felted (washed in hot water and the fibers of the wool get tight and close together) and only wool will give you that effect. Sweatshirt material won't do that.

You can use cashmere, alpaca, angora if you cannot find wool. These can all be felted/shrunk down. check goodwill in higher ended areas of town for old cashmere sweaters. Or you could use Felt strips. here's 2 using any sweaters https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wjok-YVYoSc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98tAbFKRwzU; here's some using anything/fabric https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=DIY++sweater+rugs you could make smaller sections then combine them to make large area rugs(like a bunch of white sweaters for large white rug)
Hello , here is a Hometalk link for your consideration on how .
to make a sweater rug. It would not have the same look or texture without the woolen fibers.
I hope this helps.
