Are you simply wanting it to look well used? Or do you want to paint and then distress it? If you want to distress the wood, you can use large chain, screwdrivers, hammers, almost anything metal and heavy, to create divots in the wood. You could give it a distressed 'look' with paint, by using what they call a dry brush method, with a couple of different shades of paint, somewhat close to your walnut stain. To go a little more drastic, you can use light and dark grey paints, which seem to be all the rage these days. Here are a couple posts from Hometalkers that might help:
