Get some good soil and dig in where I live very sandy as well also I add coco bark mulch every other year it has improved my soil immensely
Your best bet is to see what they are selling at the local nurseries since they only sell what grows in your region and in your soil. Even with soil amendments, it isn't wise to plant anything that needs too much special care since the chances of growing are smaller. What you can do is call your county agricultural agent and ask for their advice. It is free and very helpful.

IF you're wanting to plant normal plants, my advice is to map out your area you wanna plant in, width, length & depth. Calculate how much soil you're willing to buy. Put rocks at the 4 corners & with a string, run a string between the rocks creating a ""frame"". Dig up the entire area to the depth you want. Line the area with a black garden tarp. Garden tarps will provide proper drainage plus keep weeds from growing. Fill the entire area with Miracle Grow Potting Mix up to 2 inches from the surface & smooth out evenly. Use TOP SOIL for the remaining 2 inches. Smooth that out evenly too. Plant your plants & water them. Depending on your plant choices, water them when needed. Also, you could use bigger rocks to outline the border or top with decorative rocks using pebbles, marble chips, mulch or there's a lot of possibilities you could choose from to make it look pretty. OR you could plant cacti or succulents. They will thrive in sand or loose durt & loves the heat.
