I've cleaned vinyl records with soap and water and a soft brush like the ones from the cosmetic counter.
The parents of a high school friend owned a record shop, and they swore by soap and water--washing against the grooves. Just run the record under warm tap water, gently swipe across the surface with liquid or hand soap suds, and rinse. I prop the disc on end to air dry.
