Leslie: look at the reviews on Home Depot and Lowe's websites. Here's an example: (in fact, I did buy the first one! LOL)

Hi. Washing machines have come a long way from the wring washers. For durability and longevity, commercial washers are the best. Those produced for home use vary from agitators to non-agitators. Cleaning time in the non-agitators is longer, but gives more options. The choice, along with the price is yours and brands aren't really recommended here. DIY is more our thing. Good luck in whatever you purchase.
I’ve had mine for over 10 years and still works well. Once a month I add a cup of vinegar with regular water and to clean out old soap I have a Maytag I love this washer.
I'm unsure of the best brand, but I do feel like the ones without the agitators are the worst. I've never heard anyone be happy with them for long---if they lasted very long. I talked to a salesman about them and he agreed. I've had a Whirlpool for over 25 years! We replace the parts to keep from getting a new one. You can find many ways to repair washing machines on Youtube.
My husband sells appliances at Home Depot, all I know is stay away from Samsung and Electrolux.
I have Samsung Active Wash Aqua Jet VRT I can wash anything in it. Huge king size bedding to xlrg pet beds to delicate single items. Huge 5.2 stainless steel capacity. Quiet & powerful. Well worth the price. I've had it over 3 yrs use it heavily & no problems. I had front loader before this and regretted buying it from day one.
Your choice should factor in where you reside and the number of factory authorized repair shops for the specific brand. www.Consumerreports.org shows reviews of typical brands.
XL capacity washers are good for families and those with larger, washable comforters. Some front loaders spin at high velocities, causing them to "walk" on flooring, unless absolutely flat floor surface.
Front loaders require the door and detergent drawer be left open to preclude mildew and mold, due to wet gaskets, etc.
Plinths will afford more storage space and assist those with cervical/spinal issues.
Controls on the front of the washer are more easily accessed.
