Hi Helen. I'm Cindy. The best time to transplant Irises is late July thru September. Iris loves the heat and drier weather of summer. They also like moist soil. Once established, your iris plants will need to be divided. Late summer or early Fall are the best times for dividing them. Good luck Helen and Merry Christmas.
Helen, You’ll know they need transplanted when the clump is not blooming as well, but still sending up leaves. Depending on my growing conditions, water, etc, I transplant every year to three years. I always keep some in the original spot and move a good bit to other sections of the yard. I’ve had some that absolutely loved being under one dogwood tree and did nothing under a dogwood thirty feet away. Good luck!
