Hi Marsha, look for a hard core glass cleaner or you can try dish soap. Fireplace soot is surprisingly oily and very hard to remove from just about anything.
Use the soot itself...add water..make a paste..and rub it on...rub it off.! Use gloves!
Oh God Bless you. This is such a job. Been down this road. Had an Entire Basement covered with Soit. I used Rubbing alcohol, Linseed Oil, Creosote and Paint Remover, Plus Finished it off with Mr. Clean in a Bucket. Those are about the only realistic products that can attack soot without going through 643 Thousand Paper Towels. I hope you find a Solution Marsha.
