50/50 white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Dry brush off first then spray bricks, after 5 minutes spray again. Then wipe down with either microfiber cloth or magic eraser.
Soot tends to be oily. A good degreaser should work. Krud Kutter would be my go to.
Hi Ron. You could make a solution with equal parts of vinegar and warm water. Add a couple squirts of Dawn dish soap. Has to be Dawn. Spray this on the dirty area. Use a wire brush to scrub the soot off. Keep rinsing the brush with clean water. (Make a bucket of water for rinsing.) This way you won't be scrubbing with a dirty brush.

Hello Ron,
Dry brush it off using a wire brush. If you wet the soot it will go into the brick like paint, and then you will have difficulty getting it out, even with soap and water as the brick will draw it in further. Best wishes
Hi Ron, hope this helps you out,
Mix equal parts vinegar and water and combine in a spray bottle. After using a dry brush or sponge to remove as much loose soot as possible, spray the bricks with the solution. Let it sit for a few minutes and spray once more.

TSP?
Hi Ron, use a strong vacuum with a HEPA filter to remove loose particles. The filter helps so the soot doesn't go all over the place. Use a wire brush to scrape off the bits that are really stuck. Wipe down with a mixture of 50/50 white cleaning vinegar & water in a spray bottle. Spray liberally and wait for a few minutes so it can soak in. Scrub hard with the wire brush and repeat until it's clean. Spray on water and baking soda mix to neutralize the acid in the vinegar. I
