What will the posts be used for?
Oak is always good for strong posts. But today you can buy preshaped and stained or painted posts, trim, and decorations for deck railings at any big home improvement store. 😊
Are you talking the ground posts? If so. You need at least 3 feet underground and then post hole cement.
If you are talking railings and for a canopy they make supports that you screw in.
Building code in most areas dictates 36 inches below the ground. Pressure treated pine lumber rated for ground contact will be most adequate.
For deck railing on the upper level it will need to be bolted to the joist with lag bolts. Cannot use any anchor as this is dangerous for supporting railings. Also would not meet building codes. You need to cut an opening in the deck same size as the post. Drop the post in the opening even with the bottom of the deck joist and lag bolt through the joist into the post.
