We have just builder grade basement steps. We can't afford expensive treds, how can I paint them or finish them to make them looked good?

You could paint them in an ombre sort of design by adding a bit more white paint for each step. Or you could stencil them with bold colors. Here are some other ideas: https://www.hometalk.com/search/posts?filter=stairs
For now you can prime them and then paint them with a floor enamel so that they will wear well. You can tint your primer the same color ad your finish cost to make it cover better.

I do to and this is going to be my next project! I am going to simply paint the steps then seal with a durable floor sealer so they last. I am going to use small stair pads that can be purchased at Home Depot to add to the center of the stairs. I know this easy upgrade will make them soooo much better! Here's to our new project in the new year!
