How do you make a security bar system for your window?

I have some windows I want to put security (metal) bars on. The ones sold can be expensive. What could I use an an alternate material to get the same effect, at a lower price overall? I don't care if it looks pretty. It just needs to function. I don't mind drilling right into my window molding either.

All you need is a piece of wood the size of top of the sill to top of window then you put it in the window and no one could push the window up put on top of window
Whatever you use it needs to be removable or openable in case of emergency and the windows are the only way out. You also need to check and see if there are any city codes that need to be addressed before you install bars. Check online to see if perhaps there are videos that may help you make the bars you need for your windows.

You can't put a price on safety for you and your family. Where there is a will there is a way. Keep exploring options until you find something that meets code and fits within your budget.
I use a dowel rod that I cut to fit between the top of the window at the top and the raised window. The bottom window can’t be raised when it’s in place.
