Hi! I painted my cabinets with General Finishes milk paint a year ago, and it looks great! You can see the products I used, photos of my project, a description of the brushes, etc., I used, and a tutorial can be found here: http://momhomeguide.com/my-painted-kitchen-cabinets-a-year-later/ I painted my cabinets over a year ago. It was easy and looks great! Good luck! 😃 🍀🎨
Enamel paint also works well for cabinets. Clean them well, sand lightly and paint.
An acrylic latex paint in an enamel finish worked well for me! I cleaned my cabinets well, lightly sanded, cleaned again, used a good primer, and then I painted. Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore stores will direct you to the right paint and primer for your project.
Go to a brand specific paint store and tell them what you are doing. A good paint that will adhere and wear well will cost in the neighborhood of $60. Preparation is the key. Degrease and clean them extensively.
Jessica's posting sharing her experience with painting their kitchen cabinets is valuable reading. It is important to remember that on their project, there were two workers putting in time, they did not skimp on correct materials and technique in the preparation stage, and they had patience to allow for proper drying. Oh, and don't forget that they set up a spray booth in the garage as well as hand painting in the kitchen.
Although it is possible to successfully complete such a job, it is not a simply 'weekend diy project' by any means.
I agree, painting cabinets is tedious. Prep is the key, a light sanding and cleaning must be done before priming. Use a good acrylic paint. I would spray paint the doors and drawers. Worth the price of a sprayer. Wagner makes a good one and Homelite does too. Both fairly inexpensive. Take your time, and do it right. Do not use chalk paint, as it does not last and you certainly do not want to do this over again.
