There are two approaches, one with primer and paint and the other to chalk paint them. Either way they need to be washed clean. To prime and paint it, you need to sand it a bit and wipe it down a bit. With chalk paint, you do not need to do any sanding, but after it needs a coating of polyurethane or some finish to protect the chalk paint. I would sand, prime and paint them if it were me. The best primer is Kilz primer, in my opinion. You would want a white that can be wiped down. I hope this helps Heather.
