How do I remove ugly wood above a stove ceiling fixture?

Generally speaking, find the circuit breaker for the light and turn it off, at the panel.

Finish unassemblying the unit, until you can see inside the ceiling and determine if you have a proper ceiling box up there. If you don’t, time to call an electrician.

The new pendant lights should come with the hardware & instructions to hang them.

Follow the instructions, keeping the power off.

Hints on buying kitchen pendant lights:

1.) Must Be scrubbable, 100%. I prefer glass shades as I can put them in the top rack of the dishwasher.

2.) they will cast shadows and therefore their placement should not cast shadows on your cooking areas. If you need to “swag” them, then make sure the ceiling hook either goes into a joist or has a drywall toggle bolt.

3.) Frosted or colored glass will help, if you don’t install a dimmer switch.

4.) I prefer a medium screw base and upgrade to LEDs, as compared to G or other proprietary bases.

In CA, OR, WA, CO & NY, kitchens are required to 80% high efficacy lighting.

Hi Martha, as long as the wood is hanging rather than attached to the ceiling, you should be able to remove it easily and replace with LED pendant lights that will last for years. If it is a sunshine cancelling style, it will be a bit more work to restore the ceiling unless you can find a pendant light around the same size, or you could do something like the picture attached to cover any marking the old fixture left
