How do I organize my Christmas decorations?
How can I organize all my Christmas decoration totes? I probably have twelve altogether for my upstairs and downstairs decorations and not a large space to put them all.

If you can't store them together, make a packing list or label each container (whichever works best). Then make yourself a "treasure map" of directions that you keep somewhere you will be able to locate easily. You may not drag everything out every year but still want it around.
I can only recommend shelving. I collected all my shelves at yard sales or Craigslist, Nextdoor, etc. I have 7 large shelving uits lining my garage. One is dedicated to Christmas. If you don't have a garage then maybe a basement or attic you can use? Attics get really really hot tho. If none of those, then maybe stack them best you can in a couple of closets or unused, nonpublic place. Consider purging some of your decorations to lessen the number of crates. Also, pack really well, that alone can reduce it by one box. Oh, every year I tape a sheet of paper to the top of each crate listing most of the items or the type of items (like "kitchen/dining" which I know would have linens, plates, napkins, etc.). That way I can do whatever I want with each crate instead of trying to put in them exactly what I had in them last year. I rip off last year's list and start over each year. I always leave the last crate out for a few days because I ALWAYS find something I forgot about or overlooked. Just makes it a little easier. Good luck!
HI Susan,
I use totes. For me the best way to organize Christmas decorations is to put all of the ones that go together into the same tote, the mark it for that area. For example, everything for our living room mantle goes in one box marked "LR Mantel" . For tree ornaments, I use egg cartons to protect our smaller ornaments. Anything that will fit in an egg carton finds a home there. Other ornaments go in boxes of the same type, meaning breakable or unbreakable. Wrap breakable ones with something of your choice. Tissue, newspaper, etc. Lights are wrapped around a light holder or the empty box. That way they stay neat and untangled. All of my special dishes and linens go in a separate box, after cleaning and getting them ready for storage. Here are more ideas from another Hometalk member. I hope these help you.
