How do I redo a kitchen inexpensively?

Painting cabinets saves a huge amount of money if done by yourself. But what about back splash and countertops? I want to hire a handyman to do something normal. Not the unconventional artsy temporary weird stuff. Can you paint Formica? Paint tile? Painting I can do, but it's got to look real and be durable.

Hi Shelly, Yes you can paint Formica, but in my opinion it is only a temp. fix. Use ESP (Easy Surface Preparation) first then undercoat and then topcoat. Might be better to overlay the work top with another (if you don't want to change cabinets and worktops altogether. Also Panel the doors if formica or you could use contact or use washable wallpaper or fabric on them Mod Podge! You can use Tile stickers on splashback or Tile over or use Acrylic cut to size.

Hi Shelly, since you are wanting a very high end look I would hire a professional.

Even painted cabinets can appear sloppy if brush marks show or under color bleeds through. Remember that custom painted cabinets receive a catalyzed factory finish in temperature and humidity controlled environment.

I agree with Rebecca-find a professional who can save you money by advising where to purchase better items, yourself (avoiding middle man costs), if you trust yourself to select coordinating items. He can then do the installation work, for you.
