What color is your skirting?
Jackie, you could give it a light sanding then apply a good brand of paint, I always use Behr paint. If you don't want to paint it all you could color-match the paint that's on it, then paint where the chips are. If the chips are deep, be sure and patch them before painting.
If the damage is not too bad, light sand it with a fine grit (220 or more), going with the grain, and apply some tung oil or hemp oil. It will revive the wood.
The skirting is painted white and that is what has chipped
There are a few things you can do to improve the look of chipped skirting boards. One option is to fill in the chips with wood filler and then sand them down. This can be quite time-consuming and may not always give the desired finish. Another option is to paint over the chipped areas with matching paint to try and blend them in. However, if you want a more permanent solution, consider replacing skirting boards altogether. This is especially true if your skirting board is old and worn.
