Knotty pine will have to have a good primer put on before painting as the knots will bleed through. Wash well with TSP to remove the shiny finish and any dirt/grease. Paint with a quality primer, then paint with a good gloss or semi gloss paint.
Thank you!
Dear N. Lee,. Your going to have to use some type of primer, to cover the surface of the cabinets. Home Depot should be able to help you. If you paint your cabinets, remove all the hardware, and the doors. Use a high gloss paint, it's easy to wipe clean. Paint the doors on a flat surface, this will avoid peeling and streaks. The hardware can be spray painted, or you can buy new hardware, buy it gets pricey. Aloha!
sand, clean and then use a stain blocking/tannin blocking primer and at least two coats - you may even want to use Shellac. (Just an FYI, the tannin from knots can still bleed through with time especially if there is any direct sunlight on the cabinets). once you are primed, you can paint with a good quality paint in any sheen you want and top coat for extra protection. Just be aware that White can take a few coats :)
Take off the Doors and Hardware, to paint the doors separately. You paint as usual for everything else.
