You could paint them in an ombre pattern... start with a dark color on the bottom stair and then add more and more white paint as you get closer to the top!

Colleen, What is it you want to do as you don't give enough information of what you are working with? Are there banisters. You can paint the stairs for a little bit of money. Or do you want the wood to show. If so, then just strip off the paint, sand smooth and apply varnish or oil. There are so many possibilities and ways you could go with this project. Here are so me example photos. You can also look up on the internet different ways to update your stairs on a small budget.
