How can I make Styrofoam archways and crown molding?

I visited a home with beautiful crown moulding and archways. The owner (who has passed away) made them himself from large pieces of styrofoam. I would love an arch over our hallway and kitchen entrance. How is it done?

I love crown molding and would like to use it in some way in my home. I am worried that using crown molding in a small area will only make the room appear smaller.
Looking for an idea to make the bookcase look flush against the wall.

One thing to think about is, how likely are they to get dented. If it’s a high traffic area, it might not be a good idea.
