Hi Denise, this is such a general question. Perhaps if you are more specific you'll get good ideas and suggestions. Best to look on the internet for kitchens to see what you like and don't like. Visit home improvement stores and model homes in your area to get a feel for what you might want to do. If you can keep the plumbing in the same place when you makeover your kitchen you will save lots of dollars. Measure and draw up a floor plan of where you want your appliances, once again if you keep them in the same location that will save you hundreds of dollars rather than having gas lines, outlets changed. It's exciting to do makeovers, just research a lot first.
Denise, I am in the process of gathering information on painting my 40 YEAR OLD cabinets. Steps I have taken in this undertaking are watching" you tube" videos on kitchen cabinet painting. I have a notebook where I write down what I learned from these videos and am reading articles like this to get other advice. I am now ready to visit a paint store and ask them what they would do and what they recommend for this job. What I have learned is that it will not be a wham bam job. Time and patience's are needed, which has prepared me to deal with what I need to do to complete this job successfully. This may not have answered you question, but may be helpful.
