Remove everything that attracted them in the first place or a new colony will move in after eradicating the first. You can use commercial bait traps, or sticky sheets. I had a harmless snake move into my barn and kept the rat/mice population away. But then, not many people would tolerate a snake around. Cats are also good rat catchers if you don't feed them too much.

    Hi Joyce,

Can you put down rat poison? They also have rat traps and cardboard sticky pads available at Walmart and DIY stores.

One thing to find out where they are coming in you can do (unless you already know where they are entering) is to turn on a light at night time inside your garage. Then go and look at your garage from the outside and see of any rays of light are shining through anywhere. That is where you need to patch up.

Remove any potential nesting material from your garage (my friend had boxes of clothes stored and it was a perfect habitat for the rats). Please wear protective vinyl gloves to keep any rat droppings from getting on your skin. Make sure there are no food or water sources in your garage. De-clutter if you have any.

First , you need to find out where they are getting in !!! Seal the area with steel wool , then seal the area with wood . Make sure you don't keep any human or pet food in your garage. Also never keep or store firewood in the garage or up against your home . Look for natural repellents , someone earlier mentioned tea bags...if all else fails look into hiring pest control , rats carry disease. Good luck !!!
