How do I prepare paper kitchen cabinets for painting?
First time do it your selfer here! Have cabinets in kitchen that the paper is coming off at corners, small gouges from fingernails when opening doors etc. Hard to clean.... then what type of protectant finish would work best to be able to withstand every day use??

Your cabinets will need to have a clean, smooth surface before you paint it. Try to use a fine grit sandpaper to smooth it out then clean it well with water and vinegar, or TSP diluted in water. Apply a coat of primer then paint it with some cabinet paint. Several brands offer it. I used Valspar. Hi Jenny! Personally, I would replace them when I had the finances and/or skills. Can the paper finish be glued back in place? Odds are, it's over some type of cheap particle board. Don't despair, because you can try to seal it on or remove it and work from there. Sealing it won't fix your problem and the glue that holds it on will probably continue to dry out, with the paper pulling away. Particle board isn't pretty, but, can be covered with thin wood, laminate, Contact paper and even paint. I found an article that addressed painting:

Hi Jenny! I can tell you how to paint your kitchen cabinets with Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint! :)
It is super easy to paint with Dixie Belle:
Step one: Clean with White Lightning
Step two: If the surface is slippery, apply two coats of Slick Stick
Step three: Paint one to two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint
Step four: Use Gator Hide for a water-repellent finish
