I’ve been painting furniture since the 80’s so before chalk paint. I’ve used all kinds. The most durable imho is painters touch.
My favorite paint for furniture is General Finishes Milk Paint! You can see a tutorial here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1Jle1SVD7M&t=2s
It depends on the type of look and finish you want. Chalk paint is really popular, and will produce a matte finish. You can add a wax coating over it, but you're still not going to get high gloss.
I’m a big fan of chalk paint. It’s very easy and forgiving to use if this is a beginner project for you. If you use wax as a sealer, it will be more matte in it’s finished look. You can also seal it with a polycrylic sealer (I like Minwax) and it will have more shine.

Chalk paint would be a good choice. There are many options on the market. I suggest you use Rust-Oleum or Renessaince. You may read more here https://woodimprove.com/best-paints-for-wood/
