For the base coat, you'd be better off with an outdoor, UV type spray paint. Drips won't happen if you spray evenly and lightly and let each coat dry before the next. If you want to add a pattern or number or something else to the mailbox, again, a paint that is suitable for outdoor use - but this time you can brush it on. For a finish, go back to the spray. Use a clearcoat for outdoor use with UV protection and choose your finish. The main thing is TAKE YOUR TIME. Read the labels and follow the product's directions. Manufacturers take years to develop their products and then consumers tend to blow off the directions and get mad at the results. If you 'stay with the program' you'll have a mailbox to love for years to come. Oh, and remember to have fun!

Take a photo to the paint dept. at the home improvement store z d ask for their advice. They know what the best materials and application tools would be.

Why would you need a picture of a mailbox? It is either metal or plastic.

That's exactly why. The paints and techniques are so different between plastic and metal. If you go down the aisles of the paint dept. you will see literally hundreds of products you can use for both plastic and metal. Products so new you may not even know about them.
